Hanshin Gomez to Return Next 2/1!
1-year ¥200M Deal Official
Hanshin reported that infielder Mauro Gomez (31) reached a deal with the team for 2016, signing his contract at a hotel in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on the 4th. The one-year deal is said to be worth ¥200 million.
I’m extremely happy to be able to return to play for the Hanshin Tigers for another year. I’m training hard, just as manager Kanemoto told me to do before I left the country. I’ll do my best to make next year my best season ever,” Gomez said through a club official.
This was his second year in Japan and he played in all 143 games, hitting .271 with 17 home runs and 72 runs batted in. He went through really good and really bad stretches alike, marking much lower numbers than the .283, 26 HR, 109 RBI (league high) he produced last season. Despite this, Kanemoto wanted to see him back and so the club exercised its option on him for 2016.
One point of slight concern is next year’s spring training in Ginoza (Okinawa) and whether or not he’ll come on time. Last year his wife had just given birth to their first daughter, and this year his passport got stolen. He’s been late in coming to Japan two years in a row. Club chairman Takano vehemently insists he believes “Gomez will be here on February 1st.” All we can do is believe.
