Biography:
Cody Satterwhite signed with Hanshin on June 13, 2016. He was in the Anaheim Angels’ organization, playing for the AAA Salt Lake Bees. At the time of his signing, both Marcos Mateo and Rafael Dolis had failed to provide stability to the bullpen – both had minor injuries and Mateo’s ERA was in the upper 3’s. By the time he joined the Tigers, however, both Mateo and Dolis were up on the top squad, and performing quite well.
Cody played on the farm from the middle of June until the end of July, pitching 7 scoreless innings and notching 12 strikeouts in 8 games played. When Dolis re-injured his elbow, the team elected to bring up the big man from Jackson, Mississippi. His debut game was one whose outcome was already a foregone conclusion – the Tigers were leading 6-1 heading into the ninth inning against the lowly Chunichi Dragons. Cody allowed two hits and struck out one, blanking the Dragons to close out the game. On the season, he played in 20 games, allowing just 6 earned runs in 21 innings. His one win came late in the year (Game 141) when he threw a the eighth inning (allowing an inherited runner to score) and the team put up a two-spot in the bottom of the frame against the Yakult Swallows. The W evened his record at 1-1, and would be his final mound appearance of the season.
Satterwhite performed adequately in his short time with the team, but never got the chance to fully endear himself to the fans or become a target of their angst. The team announced Satterwhite’s release on November 15th.
