Brief Biography:
Diego Moreno spent his first five years as a pro in the minors, bouncing around various Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate clubs. He was part of the trade that sent A.J. Burnett to the New York Yankees before the 2012 season, but Moreno required Tommy John surgery early that season, and did not play baseball again until 2013. After two more seasons (plus change) in the minors, Moreno at long last made his major league debut in June 2015, playing in garbage time twice (behind nine, and ahead ten). One outing went well, the other not so well, and he was returned to AAA for a month. In July of that same year, Moreno got recalled and pitched that same day. Entering the game in relief in the first inning, Moreno benefited from 11 runs of support in the top of the second, and threw 5 1/3 innings of no-hit ball to earn his first (and only) MLB win. A bad outing and an elbow injury later, his season came to an end.
He became a designated free agent in November, and would not get back to a big league mound again until changing teams. After five mound appearances with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2017, Moreno was sent back to the minors and was ultimately released. The Cleveland Indians signed him to a minor league contract, but he was unable to crack the 40-man roster, and was released that offseason.
Hanshin signed Moreno on December 11, 2017, and was given Jason Rogers’ old number, 48. The team already had three capable import pitchers who were expected to fill the quota for the year, but in late April, set-up man Marcos Mateo returned to the Dominican Republic to be with his wife as she gave birth to their child. The Tigers called Moreno up from the farm on April 28, and made his debut the next night. He would throw in four games during Mateo’s absence, and was then returned to the farm. Moreno got another chance, though, as Mateo experienced pain in his elbow and was deactivated towards the end of May. He did not last very long, though, giving up runs in a few outings and spending the remainder of the season on the farm.
The club announced on October 31 that it would not renew his contract, and after not garnering any interest from other NPB clubs, he was released during the offseason.
