The Baystars were coming into this weekend having won three straight series against their opponents. When they took the first of this series, it looked as though they might make it four. But Masashi Itoh’s gem on Saturday evened things up, and then it would be up to Joe Gunkel to defend his undefeated record and give the Tigers a big win on Sunday. He only lasted three innings, giving up one run, but was clearly figured out by the Baystars bats. Enter Kosuke Baba in relief. He kept his ERA a clean 0.00 by throwing three shutout innings, and the veteran cleanup bats (Jerry Sands and Yoshio Itoi) provided enough muscle to carry the team to a huge win. They are now 14-0-1 in day games this season.
