The Tigers pieced together a first-inning run against a pitcher who has always had success against them (and everyone, honestly). Sugano was sharp the rest of the way, shutting out our bats for the next six innings. Unfortunately, Joe Gunkel got tagged for 7 runs in the second inning, but honestly, it could have been ended at just one. You see, with one out and runners on second and third, the team elected to draw in the infield in an attempt to prevent the tying run from scoring. It was the Giants’ #8 hitter, so if they could have gotten that out (even while allowing the runner on third to score), it would have been the second out, and the pitcher should have (probably) been the third out. Realistic scenario: 1-1 game after the top of the second. Not how it played out, though. Check the scorecard below for how that inning played out… and add an error in there for good measure.
