Spring Training

H-TEN: So let’s get started. It’s February 13th and we are almost half done with camp. How are things going so far down in Okinawa?

では、始めましょうか。今日は2月13日、キャンプももうすぐ折り返しとなります。沖縄での調子はどうですか？

KK: It’s going great. I haven’t pitched live yet but that’ll be coming up on the 16th. I’ll be throwing a sim game and then I’ll be getting into a game shortly after that. I don’t think we’ve quite settled on a date yet, but it’s all coming. I’ve just been enjoying seeing the guys again, getting around the guys, hanging out with my friends from last year, and trying to show the new foreigners the ropes a little bit, even though camp’s a whole new thing for all of us. This is my first one, but I’m trying to help them out as much as I can, and it’s been great so far.

順調です。まだ実戦では投げていませんが、16日に登板する予定です。まず紅白戦、その後対外試合で登板予定です。まだ日程は決まっていないようですが、もうすぐですね。とにかく去年からの仲間と再会できて、色んなところに行って、一緒に過ごして楽しんでいますし、キャンプ未経験の新外国人選手にも手を差し伸べています。私にとっても今回が初めてのキャンプなのですが、できる限り彼らを助けたいと思っていて、今のところとてもいい感じです。

H-TEN: Who were some of the guys you were excited to catch up with and hang out with so far? 

このキャンプでの再会や一緒に過ごすのが楽しみだった選手はいますか？

KK: A lot of the bullpen guys. We got really close last year, guys like Atsuki (Yuasa), Hamachi and Sada (Yuta Iwasada), It was great seeing those guys and getting back to hanging out again, even though I guess Sada may not be a bullpen guy anymore… but it was just great to see all the pitchers again and pick up where we left off last year.

ブルペン投手陣ですね。昨年は、アツキ、ハマチ、サダといった選手ととても仲良くなりました。サダはもうブルペン要員ではないかもしれませんが… みんなと再会して、昨年と同じように過ごすことができたのはとてもよかったです。

H-TEN: Has there been any kind of fan interaction down in Okinawa at the camps? 

沖縄のキャンプ地では、ファンとの交流はあったのでしょうか？

KK: A lot more fans here than I thought. They love coming out to see us. We were playing an intrasquad yesterday, and we got to the field at 8:00 and they already lined up halfway down the block waiting to get in, so that was cool to see for sure. 

思っていたよりも多くのファンが来てくれています。みなさんとても熱心ですよね。昨日は紅白戦だったのですが、8時にグラウンドに着くと、すでに敷地の半分くらいまで並んで入場待ちをしていて、その様子をみてすごいなと思いました。

H-TEN: Are you enjoying getting to know the new guys, especially the new pitchers? 

新メンバー、特に新加入の投手たちとも楽しくやっていますか？

KK: Yes, definitely. I’ve been hanging out with the new foreigners, trying to get to know those guys and also the new pitchers we got, like Ohtake… trying to get to know those guys just like I did last year, so… The best part about baseball for me is that some teams stay the same, but then you get new pieces coming in every year, so it’s always awesome to get to know those guys and see how they fit in and watch them and get excited for how they’re going to help us this year. Should be awesome. 

ええ、もちろんです。新しい外国人選手とは一緒にいて、彼らのことを知ろうとしていますし、大竹投手やその他の新しい投手とも仲良くなろうとしていますね。私が昨年そうだったように。チームとしては変わらなくても、毎年新しい選手が入ってくることが、私としては野球の醍醐味だと思っています。だから、新しい選手たちと出会い、彼らがどのようにチームに溶け込んでいくのかをみることも楽しんでいますし、彼らが今年どんな風にチームに貢献してくれるのかを思うと、ワクワクしますよ。きっとやってくれるはずです。

H-TEN: So you’re on a day off today, and this is the third day off down in Okinawa. How have you been spending your off days? What kind of things you do to relax between these sessions at camp? 

今日はオフですが、沖縄に到着して三度目のオフですね。オフの日はどのように過ごしていますか？キャンプのクール間でのリラックス方法は？

KK: Today I played golf, and that was our second time doing it. The first time, I went out there with Nishi-san and Umeno-san, and all the foreigners, but today it was just me, Brian Keller and Tora and Koya, two of our interpreters, so today was a lot less people out there, but it was still a great time. Golf is great for me to relax, and I don’t really care about how I shoot, just get out there and spend a few hours out there. It’s beautiful weather today, very windy but… Both days we had beautiful weather, just get out there, relax… that’s how I want to spend my off days, and then sit around and get off my feet for the rest of the day and do nothing.

今日は二度目のゴルフをしました。前回は西さんや梅野さん、外国人選手達と一緒に行ったのですが、今回は私とブライアン・ケラー、通訳のトラさんとコウヤさんだけで、少人数でしたがとても楽しい時間を過ごせました。私にとってゴルフはリラックスするのに最適で、自分のショットの良し悪しはあまり気にせず、ただ外で数時間過ごすだけ充分なのです。今日はとてもいい天気ですね、風は強いのですが。2日間ともいい天気でした。とにかく外に出てリラックスする、それが私のオフの日の過ごし方です。あとは何もせずにだらだらと体を休ませています。

H-TEN: What are your impressions so far of Okinawa? Have you seen anything aside from golf courses? 

沖縄の印象はどうですか？ゴルフ場以外にどこか出かけましたか？

KK: I’ve been to a couple of restaurants, which have been great, but I was so amazed when we pulled up to the hotel, seeing the view from my balcony, and just how beautiful it is here. I had heard about it, but you never really know until you see it. Outside of going to a few restaurants and golf courses, I haven’t done much but I really love what I’ve seen so far. Great food, great people, the weather is beautiful, the scenery is beautiful, so I think It’s a perfect place to have camp, for sure.

何軒かレストランにも行きましたが、どこも素晴らしかったです。ホテルに到着してバルコニーから見える景色を見て、この沖縄の美しさにとても驚きました。噂には聞いていましたが、実際に見てみないとわからないものですね。レストランやゴルフコースに行った以外には、特に何もしていませんが、これまで見てきたものは本当によかったです。食事も美味しくて、沖縄の方達も良い人達で、天気もいいし、景色もいいし、キャンプ地には最適な場所だと思いますね。

The Offseason and Last Year

H-TEN: Good way to end the offseason and head into the new season. Let’s talk a little bit about your offseason. What kind of things did you do, either baseball-related or otherwise to unwind? 

オフの幕を下ろし、新しいシーズンのスタートとしてはいいですよね！では、昨オフについてお伺いします。どんなふうに過ごされたでしょうか？野球を含めてプライベートの過ごし方を聞かせてください。

KK: The offseason is always good for me because I have season tickets to the (New Orleans) Saints, the football team back home, so it’s always a good time for me. I get home just as the season is starting, so I go to every home game and usually try to make it to a road game. This year I went to Arizona to see them play the Cardinals. So that was kind of my vacation for the offseason. Other than that, I played a little golf, but mostly just worked out, threw. I took a week or two off when I got home just to relax and recover after a long season, but then after that, it’s just hanging out with the family and doing a lot of training and throwing. That’s how my offseasons go.

地元のフットボールチーム（ニューオーリンズ）セインツのシーズンチケットを持っているので、それがオフの楽しみですね。ちょうどシーズンが始まる頃に帰国するので、ホームゲームは毎回観戦しますし、ロードゲームにも足を運ぶようにしています。今年はアリゾナまで行って、カージナルスとの対戦を観戦しました。オフ中のバケーションといったところですね。それ以外にはゴルフを少しやっただけで、日々筋トレや投球練習をして過ごしていました。帰国後は、長いシーズン後の体を1，2週間休ませて回復させます。その後は家族と一緒に過ごしながら、筋トレや投球練習をこなしています。それが私のオフシーズンの過ごし方ですね。

H-TEN: When your family asks you, “how was Japan?” — you probably got that question a few times, just those three words, how was Japan — what kind of answer do you give them? What do you talk about or what stands out about your first season in Japan?

ご家族から「日本はどう？」と聞かれたら、まあ何度も聞かれる質問だとは思いますが、どのように答えていますか？日本での最初のシーズンについて、どう感じましたか、あるいは特に驚いたことなどはありますか。

KK: Well, apart from baseball, the people here are so great, the food as well… I come from Louisiana which obviously is known for its food. That’s something I miss about home but I get to come here where the food is amazing as well. I stress to them how amazing of a country it is. It’s so clean, people are so nice and respectful, and the food is unbelievable. A lot of those people didn’t get to come and see me last year because all the borders were closed, but hopefully this year a lot of those people who were asking me, “How is Japan?” can come over here and see for themselves. I’m excited for that.

野球とは関係ないのですが、日本の方々は素晴らしくて、食べ物も美味しいですね。私は食の街として知られるルイジアナ州出身で、時々地元の食べ物が恋しくなるのですが、こちらの食べ物も最高ですよ。日本という国の素晴らしさをアピールしています。とにかくきれいで、みなさんとても親切で礼儀正しくて、食べ物は信じられないほど美味しいですよと。昨年は国境が閉鎖されていたために、私に会いに来られなかった人が多かったのですが、今年は「日本はどうですか」と聞いてきた多くの方たちが来日して、自分の目で確かめられるといいですね。とても楽しみにしています。

H-TEN: This year, you get to experience the full spring training, Japanese style. How does this February compare to last year, and what has it taught you about the importance of spring training? 

今年は日本スタイルの春季キャンプを経験していますが、昨年の2月と比べていかがでしょうか？しっかりとしたキャンプの重要性を確認できたのではないかと思いますが。

KK: In February last year, I was trying to imitate a spring training as closely as I could. I tried to get in touch with the team and ask them what they wanted me doing, how they wanted me to approach being at home when I was supposed to be at camp. But it kind of turned into the same thing I was doing all offseason, just keeping my workouts up and trying to throw bullpens and throw to live hitters whenever I could. But this year has been a lot better, I got be with the team and actually start working with the catchers and talking to the coaches rather than being on my own back home. It’s really important, so it’s been great to be out here. We hit the ground running and don’t waste any time and get right into it and everything feels good so far. Everything’s been great and I’m just really happy I’m here this year. 

昨年の2月は、できる限り春季キャンプに近い形でのトレーニングを試みました。チームと連絡を取り合い、彼らが私に何をして欲しいのか、キャンプに参加できていなかった私に、アメリカでどのような取り組みをしてほしいのかを確認しました。でも、結局それはオフシーズンの間私がやってきたことと同じでしたね。筋トレ、ブルペン投球、可能な時は打者相手に投げること。でも、今年はチームと一緒にいるので去年よりずっと良い環境にいます。一人アメリカで練習していた時とは違って、キャッチャーと練習したり、コーチと話したりすることができていますから。これは本当に大切なことですので、ここでキャンプに参加できて良かったです。グラウンドに走って向かい、時間を無駄にすることなくすぐに練習に取りかかることができて、何もかも気持ちよくできています。全てが順調ですし、今年はここにいられて本当にうれしいです。

H-TEN: Last year, you got here in early March and you were on the top squad for Opening Day, and as we all know, Opening Day didn’t go as expected for the Tigers. What’s your take on those first few weeks of the season, both personally and for the team? 

昨年は3月上旬に来日し、一軍で開幕を迎えましたね。周知の通り、タイガースは開幕戦でつまづきました。シーズンスタートからの数週間について、個人的に、またチームに対してどう思われますか？

KK: Yeah, obviously it didn’t go how I wanted or how we wanted. We got off to a really bad start last year but I was really happy with the way that, not only me personally but how the team was able to fight back and recover and make the playoffs. We made a push at the end and I think that’s just a testament to how hard we played last year, how hard we fought. I don’t even remember our record early, but it was not pretty. I know we didn’t win a game for our first 10 games and then maybe we were like 3 and 17 or something. It was bad, but we managed to get back to around .500. We were at .500 at one point. Just to get back in the playoffs and make a run was fun. I’m looking forward to getting off to a better start this year and making another push. 

そうですね、私自身としてもチームとしても、明らかに予想外の展開となってしまいました。昨年は非常に悪いスタートを切ってしまいましたが、私個人だけでなく、チームがその後反撃して挽回し、CSに進出できたことにはすごく満足しています。昨シーズンどれだけ必死にプレーし、必死に戦ったかの証だと思います。序盤の成績はよく覚えていませんが、決していい成績ではありませんでした。開幕から10試合は全く勝てず、その後3勝17敗とかとかまでいきましたかね。でも何とか勝率5割近くまで回復しましたね、一時は5割までいったのですよ。CSに進出するまで走り切っただけでも、楽しかったです。今年はもっといいスタートを切って、もうひと踏ん張りしたいと思っています。

H-TEN: What do you think turned things around for you? You came back up to the top squad in June during interleague and from that time on you were absolutely lights out. What was the difference? 

あなたにとっての転機は何だったと思いますか？6月の交流戦で一軍に復帰し、それからは絶好調でしたね。何か変わったことはあったのでしょうか？

KK: You know, I just had better command of all my pitches. One thing that helped me, which might have been a blessing that I went down to the farm, was that I learned the forkball. I came back and that was a good pitch for me. I went down to the farm and instead of being stubborn and saying, “whatever,” I just continued to work hard and got back and was feeling good and throwing strikes, and when you’re throwing strikes and getting ahead of hitters, good things happen, you can stay aggressive. I’m looking to doing that from day one. So when I throw my sim game in 2 days, I hope to do that and kind of set the tone for the year and try to hit the ground running. 

すべての球種がうまく投げられるようになったことです。ファームに行ったのが幸いしたのかもしれませんが、フォークボールを覚えたことも大きいですね。一軍に戻ってからは、フォークボールが決め球となりました。二軍に落ちた時、意地を張って「どうにでもなれ」となるのではなく、ただひたすら努力を続けましたし、一軍に戻ってからは気持ちも上向きで、ストライクもとれていました。ストライク先行で投げていればいいことが起こるし、アグレッシブでいられます。開幕初日からその形でいきたいですね。明後日の紅白戦で投げる予定ですが、この形で今シーズンに向けて調子を整えて、スタートダッシュを決めたいです。

H-TEN: Pardon my ignorance, but how does one learn a new pitch? How long does it take? Is it something you observe from someone directly, or by watching video? How does that come about? 

無知で申し訳ないのですが、新しい球種はどのように習得するのでしょうか？どれくらいの時間がかかりますか？誰かから直接教わるのですか、それとも動画をみて習得しますか？教えていただけますでしょうか。

KK: Well, there are a lot of ways but all pitchers play catch every day “Maybe I’ll try this!” Sometimes it comes easily, sometimes you try something for however long and it just doesn’t work for you. Mainly, when I got over here, I saw that a lot of people threw a forkball and I saw was a very effective pitch, and I saw that a lot of our pitchers had very good ones. So I just started talking to people, seeing how they gripped it, seeing what their thoughts were when they threw it, and then when you’re playing catch, just try different things, see what works for you, just repetition, get comfortable with it. I’m not going to say it came easy but it came quicker to me than I thought it would. It just got comfortable a little bit sooner and I’ve gotten questions about this in camp. People asking me about my forkball now, and it’s like, it’s still pretty new. I’m still I’m still in the process of figuring it out. It’s gotten better but I want to keep working on it. That’s been my main emphasis at camp, just trying to throw it better for strikes. It’s just really getting out and playing catching and toying with it. It could be as simple as moving the ball a little bit this way, a little bit that way, and just seeing what works, trial and error. That was a lot of what I was doing on the farm last year, just going on the mound, throwing some pitches on the mound and seeing how it feels. You’re going to have some good days and some bad days because it’s a brand new pitch. When I first started throwing, I was like, I don’t know how I’m ever going to figure this thing out. I mean, it just felt so foreign to me, but the more you work on it, the more you throw it, it becomes a little bit more comfortable and then… “I might have this thing figured out.” It’s just a lot of trial and error, repetition.

まあ、いろいろな方法があると思いますが、どの投手も日々「ちょっとこれやってみようかな」と投げています。簡単にできることもあれば、どんなに長くやってもうまくいかないこともあります。日本に来た頃、多くの人がフォークボールを投げているのを見て、とても効果的な球種だと思いましたし、阪神のピッチャー陣がすごくいい球種を持っているのもわかりました。そこから色んな人の話を聞いて、握り方をみて、どんなことを考えながら投げているのかを確認していきました。キャッチボールをしながらいろいろなことを試して、自分に合うものをみつけ、それを繰り返して、慣れていきました。簡単だったとは言いませんが、思ったより早く習得できましたね、少しだけですけど。キャンプでもこのことを質問されました。今はフォークボールについて聞かれるのですが、何というかまだ新しい球種なので、試している途中です。よくなってはいるのですが、まだまだこれからですね。このキャンプでは、ストライクを取るための投球に重点を置いています。とにかくキャッチボールをして色々と試すこと。ボールをあっちに動かしたりこっちに動かしたり、何が有効か試行錯誤することです。昨年のファームでは、これをずっとやっていました。マウンドに上がり、何球か投げて、その感触を確かめること。新しい球種ですから、うまくいく日もあれば悪い日もあります。最初の頃は、どうやったらうまくいくのかと思いながら投げていました。でも、練習すればするほど、投げれば投げるほど、徐々に自信がついてきて、「これならいけるかも！」と思えるようになりました。試行錯誤の繰り返しなのです。

H-TEN: Another guy who picked up the forkball, or at least gained confidence in it, was Joe Gunkel. He had been here for three years with the Tigers. He was your teammate for a year. Any thoughts about the way that like guys like Gunkel, Alcantara and Wilkerson played into your experience last year? 

ジョー・ガンケル選手もフォークボールを取得して自信をつけた選手です。彼はタイガースで3年間在籍しましたが、1年間チームメイトでしたね。ガンケル、アルカンタラ、ウィルカーソンといった選手たちは、昨年のあなたの経験にどんな影響があったとおもわれますか？

KK: Those guys, mainly Gunkel and Alcantara and Mel (Rojas Jr) helped me out, just being there for me. Those guys showed me the ropes and told me that whenever I had questions, I could go to them. So this year, I’m trying to be the same guy that they were for me to these new guys. I was in touch with all of them in the offseason. I was like, “Look, you got any questions before you come over here, just let me know. I might not know what I’m talking about, but I can try to help. I might have an answer for you.” So we kind of stick together and figure it out together. Like I said, we’re all new to camp, so this has been a new experience for all of us, doing Okinawa camp together. I’m just trying to be the same guy that those guys were for me last year. All the returners helped me so much in making me comfortable. Things as simple as telling me about good places to eat. So I’m just trying to do the same thing. 

ガンケル、アルカンタラ、そしてメル（ロハス・ジュニア）の3人にはすごく助けられました。色々と手を差し伸べてくれましたし、質問があればいつでも相談に乗ると言ってくれました。ですから今年は、新たに加入した外国人選手にとって私が同じような存在になろうと思っています。オフシーズンには彼ら全員と連絡を取り合いました。来日する前に何か質問があったら言ってください、何か力になれると思うし、答えられることがあるかもしれないから、と伝えました。そうやって、みんなで協力し合って、解決していくものなのです。とにかく、みんなキャンプは初めてなので、一緒に沖縄キャンプをすること自体が新たな経験です。昨年助けてくれた選手達のような存在になりたいと思っています。彼らのおかげで、快適なキャンプ生活を送れました。おいしいお店を教えてくれるなど、ちょっとしたことも含めて。ですから、私も同じことをしようと思っています。

H-TEN: What was your favorite road ballpark or your favorite city to visit on the road?

遠征で各地に行かれましたが、お気に入り球場やの街はありますか？

KK: I would say Mazda (Hiroshima) was probably my favorite road ballpark because it’s got natural grass… it kind of reminded me of an Americanized stadium. I thought it was a beautiful stadium. I don’t especially like playing on turf fields and there are a lot of them here so… I like Koshien and Mazda a little bit more than the others. Also, those are two of the more pitcher-friendly ballparks for sure. The other ones play a little bit smaller. As far as the cities, I didn’t really get to do much last year. With all the Covid restrictions, we weren’t really allowed to go out much. But Tokyo is a very cool city, and Yokohama is another one that I’m excited to explore this year. This year will be cool because I think I’ll be able to go out and do more. I won’t be trapped in my hotel as I was last year and not really doing much. Also, with me being here for one more year I’m a little bit more comfortable going around and doing stuff. Last year I was kind of wide-eyed and not having any clue where to go and what to do. So I’d say Mazda for the ballpark and Tokyo for the city.

マツダ（広島）が一番好きかな、天然芝なので。なんというか、アメリカの球場を思い出します。美しい球場だと思います。私は特に人工芝のグラウンドでプレーするのがあまり好きではないのですが、日本にはたくさんありますよね。甲子園とマツダは他の球場より少しだけ好きかな。あと、この2球場は投手向きの球場なのですよ。他の球場は少し狭く感じます。遠征先についてですが、昨年は出来ることが限られていました。コロナの行動制約もあって、あまり外出することができなかったのです。東京はすごくクールですし、横浜も今年は是非行ってみたい街です。今年はもっといろいろなことができると思うので、楽しみです。昨年のようにホテルに閉じこもって、あまり行動できないということはないでしょうから。また、日本に住んで一年が経ちますので、外出して何かをすることに少し慣れてきました。昨年はどこに行って何をすればいいのか、全く分からない状態でした。応えとしては、球場ならマツダ、街なら東京といったところでしょうか。

H-TEN: Any memorable mounds for yourself or particular games for the team that stick in your memory from last season?

昨シーズン、ご自身にとって印象に残っている登板、またチームにとって特に印象に残っている試合はありますか？

KK: There were a lot of them. I’d say the most memorable game was Game 3 of the Climax semi-finals. That was a fun game and it was tight the whole way. Of course, it was a must-win game and we were doing whatever we could to pull it off. We got in that jam at the end and Atsuki got the double play to end it, Obata threw it home, and we got the 4-2-3 double play. For a mound, I really enjoyed my first save at Koshien because of being the hero of the game. Doing that whole thing was my first experience doing that, and it was just really cool. I’d seen all my teammates do it all year and I’m like, I don’t know how I’d feel when I’m able to do that. I finally did it, and it was just a really cool experience.

たくさんありましたね。一番印象に残っている試合は、クライマックスシリーズのファーストステージ第3戦かな。終始引き締まった展開で、面白いゲームでした。もちろん、絶対に負けられない試合だったので、勝つためにできることは何でもやりましたよ。最後のピンチは、アツキがダブルプレーでしのぎました。オバタがホームに投げて、4-2-3のダブルプレーで勝ちました。マウンドとしては、甲子園での初セーブでヒーローになれた試合ですね、本当に楽しかったです。初めての経験でしたし、すごくクールでした。チームメイトがセーブするのを何度も見て、自分がセーブする時はどんな気持ちになるのかなと思っていました。ようやくその時がやってきて、最高の経験になりました。

Looking Ahead to 2023

H-TEN: What are your impressions so far of Brian Keller and Jeremy Beasley?

ブライアン・ケラー、ジェレミー・ビーズリー両選手について、ここまででどんな印象を持ちましたか？

KK: Oh, they’re great. I haven’t played catch with either of them but I watched their bullpens and I’m really excited about them. None of us have thrown live yet but I’m looking forward to seeing them in live action. We’ve all been working hard and I’m just really excited to see those guys pitch and help us win games this year. It’s going to be great. They’re really good pitchers. 

ええ、彼らは素晴らしいですよ。二人とはまだキャッチボールをしていませんが、二人のブルペンを見て、すごく期待しています。私も含めまだ誰も実戦で投げていませんが、生で見るのが楽しみです。みんな懸命に練習してきたので、彼らが投げる姿を見てすごくうれしいですし、今年の勝利に貢献してくれると思います。楽しみですね、彼らは本当にいいピッチャーですから。

H-TEN: We’ve got a new manager this year, Akinobu Okada. Have you had any interactions with him? What are your overall thoughts about him and any of the new pitching coaches that you have this year? 

今年から岡田彰布監督が就任しました。彼とは何かやりとりがあったのでしょうか？また、今年から新たに加わった投手コーチについて、どう思われますか？

KK: I was lucky enough to have those pitching coaches on the farm last year, so I’m familiar with those guys and they know me. Okada-san… I’ve talked to him a few times but we don’t really get too many chances to talk to him because he’s always busy during camp and doing his own thing. I’m just trying to earn his respect and trust by coming to camp, working hard, showing him how hard I worked all offseason, and when it comes time to pitch in games, just keep doing the same things I’ve been doing. It’ll all come together.

H-TEN: Have you had any talks with Jeff Williams?

ジェフ・ウィリアムズ氏とは何か話をしましたか？

KK: Yes. He actually just left town this morning. I said goodbye to him last night, but… he was great. He came in, helped us all out. Same thing as the foreigners last year: “If you have any questions, come ask me.” He’s been here before and pitched at a high level, and he actually went to the same college as me. So he is my sempai for sure. Now I got his (phone) number, and he told me to reach out whenever I need him, and I’m sure I will need him at some point. It was great having him here. I wish he could stay all camp, all year. I wish he would never leave. But it was great to have him here and just bounce some things off of him, talk pitching with him, talk about life in Japan. He was perfect for all of us. It was great to have him here and I was sad to see him go, but he is heading to Australia for a few weeks… so he’s going all around the globe: Arizona to Okinawa to Australia, back home in a few weeks, so I’m sure he’ll have a great time.

はい、彼は今日キャンプ地を離れてしまったのですけど、昨晩お別れのご挨拶をしてきました。彼は素晴らしい方です。色々手助けしていただきました。昨年の外国人選手達同様、「何か質問があれば私に聞いてください」と。彼は日本で長年高いレベルでプレーしていたし、実は私と同じ大学の出身なのです。名実ともに私の「センパイ」ですよ。彼の（電話）番号を教えていただき、必要なときはいつでも連絡するようにと言われました。彼のヘルプを必要とすることがいずれあるかと思います。彼が沖縄に来てくれて、すごく良かったです。キャンプ中、今シーズン中、いやもうずっといて欲しいくらいです。阪神を離れないで欲しいですね。とにかく彼がここにいてくれて、いろいろなことを議論し、ピッチングの話や日本での生活についても話すことができたのは、本当によかったです。彼の存在は、私たち全員にとって完璧でした。彼はこれから数週間オーストラリアに行くそうで、世界中を飛び回っているんです。アリゾナ、沖縄、オーストラリア、そして数週間後に帰国するとのことです。

H-TEN: Is there anything that surprises you about Japanese baseball?

日本の野球について、他に驚いたことはありますか？

KK: Honestly, I came over here and didn’t really know what the baseball was going to be like. I was more surprised at how similar it was to baseball back home. I mean, besides the fact that hitters probably hit for less power over here. But you get these questions from people back home like, “How’s the baseball over there?” And they have the impression that it’s nowhere near as good, or that the baseball is subpar, so I was really pleasantly surprised at how great the baseball is over here. Lots of great players. I’m excited to watch the World Baseball Classic. We’ve got a few teammates on that team. It’ll be fun to see how Team Japan does. Obviously, they’re coming off the gold medal at the Olympics, but I think that’s going to be really competitive tournament. I think Team Japan’s going to be really stacked, along with a few other teams, the US, the Dominican. So I’m excited to see how that turns out. It should be really good baseball. 

正直なところ、日本の野球についてよく分かっていないまま来日しました。そして、アメリカの野球と似ていることに驚きました。打者のパワーは日本の方が劣りますけどね。地元の人からは「向こうの野球はどうなの？」とよく聞かれます。彼らはアメリカの野球がダントツ、日本はイマイチという印象を持っているので、私としても良い意味で日本の野球のレベルの高さに驚かされました。素晴らしい選手がたくさんいますね。WBCもとても楽しみにしていますよ。チームメイトが何人か代表に選出されていますし、日本チームがどのような活躍を見せるか楽しみです。オリンピックで金メダルを獲得した後ですが、この大会は本当に拮抗した争いになると思います。アメリカやドミニカなどと同じく、チームジャパンは本当に手強い存在になると思います。だから、どうなるかワクワクしていますね。素晴らしい野球がみれるはずです。

H-TEN: It feels like it’s going to be an all-hands-on-deck kind of tournament this time around as compared to the past. It’s really up for grabs and it’s going to be some really exciting ball. 

今回は、これまでの大会よりも総力戦が繰り広げられそうです。一戦一戦が負けられない戦いで、エキサイティングな野球をみることができるかと。

KK: I think so, too. I’m excited to watch it. I’m rooting for our two guys, ‘Mu and Atsuki, to contribute and do whatever they can. It’ll be a great experience for them, regardless. Playing that level of baseball and playing against all those great players. I’m excited to watch it.

私もそう思っています。大会を楽しみにしています。ムーとアツキの2人には、できる限りのチームに貢献してもらいたいと思っています。いずれにせよ、彼らにとっては素晴らしい経験になるはずです。あのレベルで野球をすること、偉大な選手たちと対戦すること、それを見るのが楽しみです。

H-TEN: Straight up, are you more invested in Team USA, or Team Japan, or neither?

正直なところ、アメリカチームと日本チーム、どちら側につきますか？あるいはどちらでもない？

KK: Neither, really. I mean, me being an American guy, I’m rooting for Team US, but now I have teammates playing for Team Japan. I wouldn’t say I’m rooting for either team. I just want to see good baseball and I think that’s what we’re going to get.

どちらでもないです。私はアメリカ人なのでアメリカチームも応援しますが、今はチームメイトが日本チームでプレーしています。そのどちらかだけを応援することはないですね。ただいい野球がみたいですし、きっとそうなると思います。

H-TEN: Getting back to camp, are there any young arms that have surprised or impressed you? Obviously, you’re busy doing your own thing as well, but just in your time of observation, have you seen any changes in some of the players or some of the new guys that came in?

キャンプに話を戻しますが、驚いた選手や印象に残った若手投手はいますか？もちろんあなたも自分のことで精一杯でしょうから、少ないお時間でみた限りで構いません。変化がみられた選手や新しく入ってきた選手について何か気になることはありましたか？

KK: The one pitcher I’ve been really impressed with this camp is Saiki. Obviously, he came back off the injury last year and pitched really well for us, but this year, man, he’s been just… his stuff’s just been so good. He’s been locked in from Day One and I’m excited to see him. I think he’s fully healthy now and letting it loose now. He looks a little bit more comfortable and his stuff has been really good. He’s been throwing really hard. Same thing with Junya Nishi, too. He’s been really good this camp, so I’m excited to see all those guys… not “grow up” but just one year older and getting a little bit more comfortable and ready to dominate this year. I think they really have a chance to. 

このキャンプで印象に残っている投手は、才木選手です。昨年もケガから復帰して好投してくれましたが、今年はもうとにかく調子がいいんです。初日からしっかりと投げてくれて、彼の投球をみるのがとても楽しみです。今は体の状態も完璧で、力を抜いていると思います。少し余裕があるようにも見えますし、とにかく素晴らしい投球をしています。力一杯投げていますよ。西純矢選手も同じです。今年のキャンプでの調子はすごく良くて、この二人が楽しみで仕方ありません。成長ではなく1つ年を重ねただけで、以前より楽に投げていますし、今年大活躍する準備ができているという感じです。彼らには本当にそのチャンスがあると思います。

H-TEN: Any thoughts about who the ninth-inning guy will be this year? Has there been any talk of that? Do you have ambition to be that guy, or what does that situation look like? 

今年は誰が9回を任されると思いますか？そのような話は出ていますか？あなた自身は9回の男になりたい気持ちはありますか？今どのような状況でしょうか？

KK: I don’t really know. I obviously have ambition to be that guy, but I’m trying to help the team wherever I can. There have been some talks about it. I think it’s probably going to be Atsuki, but he’s going to be away from the team for a little bit (WBC), so who knows who can do it? It could be me, it could be Beasley, it could be Suguru. I guess that’ll have a lot to do with how we perform at camp. But at the end of the day, I don’t really care where I pitch, I just want to help the team win, whether it be in the first inning or the ninth. I think all our (relief) pitchers feel the same way. They don’t care what their role is. They just try to throw up a zero and pass it on to the next guy. I think that’s part of what made us so good last year in our bullpen. We were so deep and had so many good pitchers. Whenever we went out there, just put a zero and pass it on to the next guy and that’s usually what we did. I’m sure it’s going to be the same this year. Who knows what the roles are going to be? I’m excited to see how that plays out, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter to me where I pitch. I just want to contribute somehow. 

本当にわからないです。私としてはもちろんその男になりたいですし、どういう立場であってもチームに貢献したいと思っています。この件については色んな話がでていますが、おそらくアツキだと思います。ただ彼はしばらくチームから離脱するので（WBC）、どうなるかはわかりません。私かもしれないし、ビーズリーかもしれないし、スグルかもしれません。キャンプでのパフォーマンスも大きく関わってくると思います。でも結局のところ、どこで投げてもいいし、1回でも9回でも、チームの勝利に貢献したいという気持ちに変わりはありません。うちの（リリーフ）ピッチャーたちはみんな同じ気持ちだと思います。自分の役割が何であるかは気にしない、ただゼロを積み上げて、次の投手につなぐだけ。それが、昨年のブルペン陣の良さだったと思います。選手層が厚く、いい投手がたくさんいました。ブルペンに入ったら、とにかくゼロを積み重ねて次の投手につなぐ。常にこの姿勢で投げていました。今年も同じことです。どのような役割分担になるかはまだわかりませんが、結局のところどこで投げるかは関係ありません。ただ何とかチームに貢献したいと思っています。

H-TEN: I think this is kind of a redundant question but I’m going to ask you anyways. What are your goals personally and for the team for this season? 

何度も聞かれている質問かもしれませんが、お伺いしますね。今シーズンの個人的な目標と、チームとしての目標を教えてください。

KK: For the team, I want to win the Central Division. We haven’t done that in a while. Obviously, that’s the ultimate goal for a lot of us, is to win the Central and ultimately play for the title and win the title in the end. Personally, I don’t really have too many goals. My main goal is just to come out, hit the ground running this year, and not really take time getting into it like I did last year, and from day one, just be the pitcher I know I can be. If I just take it one outing at a time, one inning at a time, I know the rest will take care of itself. Whatever goals I do have, I’m sure I will accomplish, so from game one, just pitch how I know I can pitch, and I think the rest will take care of itself. 

チームとしては、セ・リーグ制覇です。長年優勝から遠ざかっています。間違いなく優勝はほとんどの選手にとって最終的な目標です。王者のタイトルをかけてプレーし、王者のタイトルを獲得することが目標です。個人的には、あまり多くの目標は持っていませんが、一番の目標は、とにかくマウンドに立ち続け、昨年のように時間をかけず初日から自分の投球ができるようにすることです。1つづつアウトをとって、1イニングを大切にすれば、あとはどうにかなると思っています。どんな目標も必ず達成できると思いますので、初日から自分の投球ができるように投げるだけ、あとはどうにかなると思っています。

H-TEN: My selfish goal for you is that you become the next Jeff Williams who stays with the team for 7 years and is back here in 10 to 15 years coming to camp and advising the young guys. 

私の勝手な希望としては、あなたには7年くらいチームでプレーして、10～15年後にはキャンプに来て若手にアドバイスするような、次のジェフ・ウィリアムスになってほしいと思っています。

KK: That’s funny. We were talking about that. He was like, “You need to become the next Jeff.” I was like, “That would be great!” I saw how much fun he had when he was here, and how much he enjoyed seeing the guys he used to play with. Kubota-san and him were really close when they were teammates. That would be something. 

面白いですね、私たちもちょうどその話をしていたんですよ。彼から「君は次のジェフにならなければいけないよ」と言われ、私は「そうなれば最高だな！」と。彼がこちらに滞在中、昔一緒にプレーした仲間に会ってとても楽しそうにしているのを見ました。久保田さんとはチームメイト時代、本当に仲が良かったようです。そういうの、いいですよね。
